Playa Norte is the reason many people fall for Isla Mujeres: a wide ribbon of powder-soft sand on the island's north tip, with water so shallow and calm you can wade out fifty metres and still stand. It regularly appears among the best beaches in Mexico and the Caribbean — and it is a ten-minute stroll from Florita 39.
What makes it special
The north shore faces away from the open sea, so there is almost no surf: the water is a warm, glass-clear turquoise that is perfect for kids, floats and long lazy swims. Palms and beach clubs line the sand, and the sunsets — looking toward Cancún's skyline across the channel — are the best on the island.
When to go
- Early morning (before 10 am) is calm, cool and nearly empty — our favourite.
- Midday brings day-trippers from Cancún; the vibe is livelier, the sand busier.
- Late afternoon the boats leave, the light turns golden, and the beach exhales. Stay for sunset.
Good to know
- The beach is public and free. Beach clubs rent loungers, or bring a towel and pick your palm.
- There is little natural shade at midday — bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
- Water shoes are unnecessary: the bottom is pure sand.
