Isla Mujeres has one golden rule of transport: skip the car, take the cart. The island is eight kilometres end to end, the centre is car-free by design, and an open-air golf cart at 30 km/h is exactly the speed the island was meant to be seen at.
What it costs
Expect roughly $50 USD for a half day and $70–80 USD for a full day, varying by season and cart size. Hourly rentals exist but a full day is the better deal if you plan the southern loop. As a Florita 39 guest, ask our concierge — we leave a cart ready for you at the hotel, no lines at the ferry-terminal agencies.
What you need
- A valid driver's license (any country) — drivers must be 18 or older.
- A credit card or cash deposit, depending on the agency.
- Nothing else: carts come charged/fuelled for the day.
The perfect loop
Head south along the western malecón: first stop Tortugranja (sea-turtle sanctuary), then the beach clubs of the south-west shore, and on to Punta Sur — cliffs, the Ixchel temple and the easternmost sunrise point in Mexico. Come back north via the wilder east coast for the surf views, and time your return for a late lunch at Rubén's or a swim at Zama.
Local tips
- Drive on the right; watch for scooters overtaking everywhere.
- Park only in marked areas in the centre — it is walkable anyway.
- Rain shower? They pass in twenty minutes. Pull over, order a coconut.
