Honest answer: there is no bad month on Isla Mujeres. But each season gives you a different island, and knowing the rhythm helps you pick yours.
December to April: the classic high season
Dry, sunny, 24–29°C, with the clearest winter water. This is the island at its most social — book ferries, tours and rooms well ahead, especially around Christmas and Easter. Occasional winter north winds ("nortes") can stir the sea for a day or two.
May to September: warm water and whale sharks
Our favourite secret: early summer. The sea is bathtub-warm, sunsets stretch long past eight, and from mid-May to mid-September the plankton bloom offshore brings the whale sharks — snorkeling beside the world's largest fish, with July and August as the peak. It is hotter (30–33°C) and more humid, with quick afternoon showers that clear as fast as they come. Summer also brings the best direct-booking offers.
October to November: the quiet gem
Fewer visitors, soft prices, warm sea. Some rain, yes — but also empty beaches, golden light and the island moving at its own pace. If you want Playa Norte nearly to yourself, this is it.
A note on hurricane season
The Atlantic season runs June to November; direct hits are rare and the island is well practised. Watch forecasts, book flexible rates, and don't let statistics scare you off the best-value months.
